Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The article introduces complete findings of the research on the well-known Suchu Island (Excavation VIII) carried out in 1997. We describe the conditions of excavations, stratigraphy and arrangement of half-dugout-dwellings 6 and 7, lithic artifacts, ceramics, household and non-utilitarian items. The methods of spatial distribution, stratigraphy, morphotypology, and cultural chronology were applied. The aim of the work was to investigate dwellings on the southwestern edge of the island. The excavation area is 162 m2. Stratigraphy of dwelling 6: turf on top, dark brown loam deeper, brown soil underneath. The substrate is yellow-colored sand. The dwelling pit is rectangular in shape with rounded corners: 6.45 × 5.6 m, 85–92 cm deep; hearth pit is 68 × 55 × 20 cm. Dwelling 7 is rounded 6.45 × 7.2 m, 55 cm deep. Hearth pit is 55 × 40 × 40 cm. The lithic assemblage contains products of primary reduction, implements, and tools, including fragments thereof. There are artifacts intended for procurement and processing of various materials, as well as non-utilitarian items. Almost complete vessels of simple forms, fragments of their different parts, a fragment of a spinning wheel, and cult-related items are also present. Most of the pottery exhibits friability and delamination; the paste contains organics (shells of freshwater mollusks). The ornamentation is vertical or horizontal zigzag, rectilinear and curvilinear incised grooves, appliquéd fillets (on the rims), and scratches. Based on technological and decorative features, the pottery can be attributed to the Late Neolithic Voznesenovskoye tradition. A small number of fragments of Middle Neolithic Malyshevo and, possibly, Final Neolithic pottery was recorded. Both dwellings and the majority of the related materials belong to the Late Voznesenovskoye culture; the complex is dated to the mid-2nd millennium BC.
