Temporal Seismograph: A New Reading Layer for Complex Systems

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This work introduces the concept of a Temporal Seismograph as a new observational layer for complex systems. Instead of optimizing performance or predicting events, the framework focuses on continuous temporal observation, making visible the accumulated cost of maintaining system coherence over time. The document establishes an operational analogy — not a metaphor — between core principles from neuroscience (perception, attention, automation, tension, and conscious interruption) and systemic governance. From this perspective, systems fail not due to sudden events, but due to unobserved temporal accumulation. At the center of the framework is the Temporal Entropic Cost (CET), a domain-agnostic metric designed to quantify how expensive it becomes to sustain a system’s coherence as time progresses, independently of instantaneous performance or efficiency. The proposed approach does not claim control, intervention, or prediction. It provides a non-invasive, system-independent observation layer, comparable to a seismograph: detecting structural tension before rupture without altering the system itself. This document is intended as a foundational reference for applications across technology, infrastructure, finance, governance, and complex adaptive systems, offering a new way to reason about risk, sustainability, and decision-making over time.
