Unlocking the Potential of Rosemary in Alopecia: A Narrative Review of Evidence on Mechanism, Applications and Challenges

Year: 2025
Type: review
Abstract: Rosemary ( Rosmarinus officinalis ) has long been used in traditional medicine. Recent studies suggest it supports hair regrowth by enhancing scalp circulation and exerting anti‐androgenic effects, with efficacy comparable to minoxidil but a more favourable safety profile. It’s revealed that rosemary may benefit androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata, and central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia through improved vascularity, anti‐inflammatory activity, and antioxidant effects. Clinical studies show promising outcomes, but responses vary, and large‐scale, long‐term trials are lacking. This review evaluated the therapeutic potential of rosemary in managing different types of alopecia by focusing on clinical trials, mechanistic studies, and safety reports. Rosemary can be a cost‐effective, natural option with potential as an alternative or adjunct to conventional alopecia treatments, but further robust trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety.
