Abstract: COVER PHOTO : Researchers photographed at sunset at Beaverdam Reservoir, Virginia, USA while collecting water quality monitoring data to test hypotheses about the predictability of freshwater ecosystems. Calculating measures of ecosystem predictability—such as permutation entropy—requires access to long‐term ecological datasets, which necessitate many hours in the field to collect data. In this photo, multiple teams of researchers are measuring depth profiles of water temperature, dissolved oxygen, specific conductance, water chemistry, and plankton. These focal variables were analyzed by Carey et al. ( Ecology , Volume 107, Issue 1, Article e70292, doi: 10.1002/ecy.70292 ) in their study that highlights how permutation entropy analyses of long‐term data can benefit ecological model development and expand our understanding of how ecosystem predictability varies across space and time.
