From Capture to Control: Initial Capture Increases Learned Suppression

Abstract: This project contains all data, analysis scripts, materials, and documentation for the manuscript From Capture to Control: Initial Capture Increases Learned Suppression. The present study examines the capture-dependent suppression hypothesis. Three experiments tested the prediction that initial capture facilitates a learning process that leads to effective suppression. To accomplish this, we introduced a new eye-tracking technique in which the color of the to-be-ignored items changed every five trials. These short runs allowed us to examine learned attentional biases with high statistical power. The findings support a model of attentional control whereby an initial instance of distraction promotes effective ignoring on future encounters with distracting stimuli.
