Incidence and Outcome of Primary Hyperparathyroidism–Associated Pancreatitis at a Tertiary Care Center
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: ABSTRACT Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is a rare cause of acute pancreatitis (AP). We reviewed 7 hospitalized PHPT-associated AP cases among 466 consecutive admissions (1.5%) at an Eastern India tertiary center from January 2022 to October 2024. Diagnosis required elevated intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH). Patients (median age 34; 57% male) mostly had mild AP; one had moderately severe and one severe AP. Two were normocalcemic with raised iPTH. All underwent localization and minimally invasive parathyroidectomy. Over a 9-month median follow-up, no mortality, symptomatic hypocalcemia, or recurrence occurred. Routine calcium and iPTH screening can detect PHPT in idiopathic AP, reducing morbidity and recurrence.
