Conventional and Minimally Invasive Techniques in Gingival Recession Management: A Case Series
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Gingival recession is a common mucogingival condition characterized by the apical displacement of the gingival margin (GM) relative to the cementoenamel junction (CEJ), leading to dentinal hypersensitivity, root caries, and esthetic concerns.1 The management of gingival recession has evolved significantly, transitioning from conventional approaches to patient-centered, minimally invasive interventions that aim for complete root coverage (CRC), harmonious soft tissue esthetics, and long-term stability.2 Initially, procedures such as the free gingival graft (FGG), introduced by Björn and refined by Sullivan and Atkins, increased keratinized tissue but often produced suboptimal esthetic results.3 A major advancement was the development of the subepithelial connective tissue graft (SCTG) by Langer and Langer. When combined with a coronally advanced flap (CAF), SCTG provided predictable root coverage, enhanced gingival thickness, and superior esthetic outcomes, particularly in Miller's class I and II recessions, establishing it as the gold standard.
