Reimagining the Humanities and Social Sciences in 21st-century Africa: Challenges and Future Directions
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Research in the humanities and social sciences (HSS) plays a critical role in shaping societal development, informing public policy, enhancing innovation, and providing insights into human behavior and cultural dynamics. However, in Africa—and notably within institutions such as the University of Botswana—researchers in these fields face significant challenges that hinder their impact and visibility. These challenges include persistent marginalization of HSS compared to the natural sciences, underfunding, limited institutional support, diminishing emphasis on theory and methodology, and increasing administrative and teaching responsibilities that constrain research time. This paper critically examines these issues while advocating for the repositioning of humanities and social sciences research as central to addressing Africa’s 21st-century development priorities. It highlights the importance of aligning research agendas with societal needs and policy demands, thereby enhancing relevance and uptake. Furthermore, the paper explores strategic opportunities such as fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, enhancing partnerships with government and industry stakeholders, and designing research that responds to local and regional challenges. Drawing on practical experiences from the University of Botswana, the study proposes mechanisms for enhancing research visibility, capacity, and influence in both academic and non-academic spheres. Ultimately, the paper underscores that addressing the challenges and leveraging the available opportunities can transform HSS research into a powerful catalyst for innovation and sustainable development in Africa.
