Year: 2021

Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Objective: To study serum T3, T4 and TSH levels in patients admitted in ICU and its correlation with the outcome. Methodology: This prospective observational study was conducted in an ICU of tertiary care center in western India. Results: Mean T3 level was 0.534 ng/mL in expired patient while it was 0.724 ng/ml in survived patients (p = 0.005). The patients having low T3 levels, days of ventilator requirement and inotropes support was more (p = 0.001 and p = 0.004). In patients with T4 level less than normal i.e., <5.1 µg/dl, odds ratio was 3.148. Mean days of inotropes in patients with T4 <5.1 µg/dL was higher than patients with normal T4 (p = 0.02). Conclusion: Low T3 level was significantly associated with high mortality, longer days of ventilator and inotropic support. Low T4 levels significantly correlated with the high mortality and longer duration of inotropic support.
