Wastewater From Poultry Slaughterhouses: Characterization, Treatment, and Ecological Valorization
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Wastewater generated by poultry slaughterhouses represents a significant environmental challenge due to its high organic load, elevated concentrations of nutrients, fats, and pathogenic microorganisms. If inadequately treated, these effluents may exert considerable negative impacts on surface and groundwater ecosystems. This study investigates the characteristics, treatment, and ecological valorization potential of wastewater originating from a modern poultry slaughterhouse, with a particular focus on the poultry farm, facility located in Târgu Jiu, Romania. An integrated methodological approach was employed, combining physico-chemical and microbiological analyses with an evaluation of applicable mechanical, biological, and chemical treatment technologies.
