Nursing's Legacy From the AIDS Pandemic: 1985–2026

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: It would be difficult to pick a topic so instrumental, formative, and impactful on all aspects of nursing in the last 50 years than the HIV/AIDS global pandemic. The emergence of HIV in the early to mid-1980s had-and continues to have-an immense impact on nursing. This commentary traces some of these key issues and argues that, despite the overwhelming tragedies within the pandemic, we can also trace some aspects that, on reflection, exerted a positive and lasting influence on nursing practice. These aspects of nursing practice are broad as a result of the multi-faceted aspects of AIDS/HIV-being a life-threatening infection that was initially without cure or effective treatment, an infection with sexual and drug use trajectories that created social stigma, and an infection that causes a great deal of fear and anxiety related to its transmission characteristics-which were initially unclear. In other words, AIDS was far more than a disease-it was a global, social phenomenon that had a substantial impact on health care and nursing particularly.
