Application of Reengineering Techniques for Analyzing the Performance of a Gas Turbine-Based Floating Power Plant

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This article investigates the application of digital twin (DT) technology to the design and modernization of floating power plants (FPPs).FPPs represent a strategically important yet technologically demanding platform for integrating future carbon-free fuels.A computational model of a gas turbine-based power system is developed and analyzed for operation on alternative fuels, with particular emphasis on ammonia. The model serves as the core of a DT framework, enabling virtual testing and optimization under realistic marine operating conditions. The study demonstrates, using AxSTREAM® software, the potential of DT technology for structural reengineering of the thermodynamic cycle.Specifically, an analysis of the UGT25000 engine (27.5 MW) shows an efficiency of 34.2% when operating on liquefied natural gas and 37.5% on pressurized ammonia, compared to a baseline efficiency of 36.4% on natural gas.The higher efficiency achieved with ammonia highlights its potential as a carbon-free fuel, despite well-known combustion challenges. The results confirm the feasibility of reengineering existing gas turbine engines for alternative fuels through targeted optimization of cycle parameters, including compressor pressure ratio and turbine inlet temperature. The proposed DT-based approach provides a systematic and cost-effective pathway to accelerate the decarbonization of maritime and off-grid power generation systems.
