Reconstructing regulation for decarbonization: corporate governance, reputation, finance and innovation in the energy transition.
Year: 2025
Type: dissertation
Abstract: This thesis investigates how regulatory frameworks can be redesigned to effectively support the global energy transition, emphasizing corporate governance, reputation, financial mechanisms, and technological innovation.Recognizing that traditional regulatory tools often fall short in fostering rapid decarbonization, this research proposes novel approaches integrating market-oriented solutions, reputational accountability, innovative financing mechanisms and venture capital engagement within the energy sector.Four interconnected articles systematically analyze different aspects of the energy transition. The first article addresses how shared-ownership structures, with government minority stakes in, can align corporate behavior with energy transition goals, improving governance and economic efficiency. The second examines reputational regulation in the oil industry, demonstrating how corporate reputation and stakeholder accountability can drive meaningful ESG compliance and mitigate greenwashing. The third article evaluates financial instruments specifically tailored to sustain the petroleum industry during the energy transition, advocating for structured finance solutions that simultaneously maintain financial stability and incentivize sustainability. The fourth explores the critical role of venture capital in funding clean technologies, highlighting how collaboration between oil and gas firms and venture capital funds can accelerate innovation necessary for decarbonization.Collectively, these contributions provide a comprehensive framework for reconstructing regulatory paradigms to align corporate behavior, market incentives, and governmental policies, ultimately advancing the global objective of decarbonization.
