Performance management in coffee growing: A multivariate analysis applied to coffee production in the main Brazilian regions

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of the main Arabica and Conilon coffee producing regions in Brazil in the 2018-2019 and 2020-2021 harvest years, through the application of the multivariate technique of Principal Component Analysis (PCA), covering theoretical and practices for the context of coffee production in Brazil. Therefore, the study used a qualitative and quantitative approach, descriptive and followed the inductive logic. The research sample consisted of 33 coffee producers distributed in the 12 main producing regions participating in the Campo Futuro project by CIM/UFLA. The data collection and organization stage occurred with the application of a semi-structured questionnaire to coffee producers in the mold of a field research. The results signaled the intensive use of fertilizers, correctives and pesticides in the 2018-2019 crop year in order to guarantee greater productivity in these areas, while in 2020-2021 there was a greater insertion of sustainable production practices, based on increased investments in technologies for this purpose. Some of the contributions indicated an improvement in the productive performance of the 12 main regions elucidated, the generation of indicators of a sustainable nature and the generation of comparable performance indices for the periods of analysis.
