Fault ride through capability improvement methods for DFIG: A review

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: In recent years, the renewable energy sources have drawn wide attention due to depleting fossil fuel reserves. Wind energy is one of the renewable energy sources. The wind turbine with doubly fed induction generators (WT-DFIGs) as a source of power generation has been confirmed to be the most auspicious renewable energy for the next generation. The most important feature of the wind energy source is the ability to operate separately from the network or to work with the main network at a common coupling point (PCC). However, the increased penetration level of these sources impacts the performance of power systems and provides various operation and control challenges because these sources are extremely sensitive and vulnerable to grid disturbances like sag and swells. Therefore, from the perspective of control strategies, system components, control structures, grid codes, storage systems, types of control, fault fixing techniques, and many other aspects of fault ride through capabilities of (WT-DFIGs) should be investigated. A thorough analysis that takes into account a number of factors and the most recent research has been provided in this regard. Additionally, a classification of various subjects is suggested for each part in order to highlight the studies' strengths and weaknesses and help identify future research. This review can be useful for researchers to choose their desired studies and conveniently study the most recent advancements in FRT improvement systems for DFIG.
