Healing spaces in Chinese continuing care retirement communities: elderly design preferences and demographic differences

Year: 2026
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Healing spaces have been recognised for their ability to facilitate healing and enhance well-being. The present study aims to explore the perceptions of elderly residents regarding the healing space design factors within Chinese CCRCs. This study adopted a quantitative approach. A structured survey used for data collection, which involved nine design factors: nature, safety, lighting, privacy, colour, social support, sense of control, art, and noise control. Data were analyzed through one-way ANOVA to assess demographic differences in preferences based on different variables. The findings reveal that elderly residents generally preferred all nine design factors. In this regard, nature resulted as being the most favored. Demographic analysis showed that age and gender significantly influenced preferences for several factors of design. Health status, length of residence, and living arrangements also resulted in particular significance for preferences regarding noise control. However, marital status and level of education did not show notable differences in the preferences for design. The research contributes to the broader understanding of the design of the environment and its impact on the well-being of elderly residents. The study also provides practical guidance for improving the practices of design in CCRC settings.
