Sexual violence: a five-year review at Spedali Civili of Brescia
Year: 2026
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: BACKGROUND: Over the past five years, knowledge about sexual violence has grown, and there is now both a legal and cultural effort to combat it. The ultimate goal is to reduce its rising incidence. This study analyzes cases from the last five years (2020-2024), continuing the work conducted in the previous decade.METHODS: Data were collected from consultations regarding suspected or reported sexual acts involving adults and minors. The information obtained was divided into two categories: details reported by the suspected victim and findings from the physical examination. This procedure is followed each time a suspected victim presents to the Emergency Room (ER), ensuring a standardized and reliable assessment system.RESULTS: Our data show that females remain the most affected population, although the proportion of minors and males has been increasing over the years. In many cases, the reported perpetrator is a family member, partner, or former partner.CONCLUSIONS: Over the years, efforts to address this crime have intensified, resulting in simpler pathways for victims and harsher penalties for perpetrators. However, the number of reported crimes continues to rise significantly. Education and awareness may eventually lead to change, but so far they have not proven sufficient.
