Beyond the bow: Diversity-crewing as the “Third D” in Maritime Megatrends:Shaping the Future of Work and Inclusion at Sea: The case study of the tanker vessel shipping company, Hafnia.
Year: 2025
Type: report
Abstract: Diversity-crewing is currently understood as a megatrend in the maritime sector, in line with megatrend theory, which defines such developments as long-term, global, and cross-sectoral forces that fundamentally reshape industries and societies. Driven by demographic changes, global labour mobility and heightened expectations for equality and inclusion, diversity-crewing goes beyond a recruitment strategy and policy aim: where it represents a structural transformation of maritime labour practices. As a third megatrend after digitalisation and decarbonisation, diversity-crewing is expected to exert a sustained influence on the strategic orientation and competitiveness of the maritime industry. This report and recent empirical work, in the Maritime Culture Lab (facilitated by Hafnia and conducted by the University of Southern Denmark (SDU), 2024–25), indicates that implementing gender balance on board can develop observable improvements in leadership, teamwork, mental health and well-being. The research underscores diversity-crewing as becoming a feature of maritime labour practice. While progress is still required across cultural, generational and gender diversity, change shows promise. The trend toward more diverse crews is observable and has measurable impacts.
