A novel flavone-based fluorescent probe for hydrazine detection in aqueous, soil and cell environments

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Hydrazine, a colourless, volatile, and toxic chemical, is important in chemistry, agriculture, pharmacology, and industry. It is extensively utilised as a catalyst, textile dye, and medicinal precursor. Despite its extensive use across several domains, it is a significantly perilous substance with carcinogenic and mutagenic properties. Excessive inhalation of hydrazine results in several health issues, including pulmonary oedema, cancer, convulsions, and other neurological disorders. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has classified hydrazine as a probable human carcinogen, establishing a threshold value of 10 ppb (0.31 μM). Providing a simple, reliable, and practical approach to monitoring hydrazine levels will be imperative due to its essential roles. In this work, a novel flavone-based fluorescent probe was designed and developed to detect hydrazine in various environments. The probe (ARYA) exhibited “turn-on” response with high selectivity and sensitivity (LOD = 71 nM). Also, the probe efficiently identifies hydrazine in water, soil and living cell milieu.
