Thermally Drawn Multifunctional All‐Hydrogel Fibers for Anti‐Fibrotic and Multimodal Neural Interfaces (Adv. Mater. 9/2026)
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Multifunctional All-Hydrogel Fibers Hydrogels possess both mechanical and chemical similarity to neural tissues. Although diverse hydrogels have been synthesized for biomedical applications, integrating multiple hydrogels into compact multimaterial architectures remains challenging. In their Research Article (DOI: 10.1002/adma.202511634), Seongjun Park and co-workers identify a class of thermoplastic hydrogels and introduce the hydrogel thermal drawing process (HG-TDP), a fabrication platform that seamlessly integrates functional hydrogels into multimodal and three-dimensional neural probes. The resulting all-hydrogel fibers simultaneously allow precise neuromodulation at the fiber tip while maintaining anti-fibrotic tissue interfacing along their entire length. By bridging the materials gap between neural interfaces and biological tissues, HG-TDP establishes a foundation for the development of implantable neurotechnologies that naturally integrate with the nervous system.
