The Freedom to Say 'No'
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This article explores the age-old debate between determinism and free will, proposing a pragmatic shift from "freedom of choice" to "freedom of negation." Drawing on neuroscience, specifically the Libet experiments and the inhibitory functions of the prefrontal cortex, the author argues that human dignity and moral responsibility reside in our capacity to say "No" to biological and environmental impulses. By redefining free will as the power to veto automatic behaviors, the paper offers a "practical compatibilism" that addresses the concerns of both determinists and libertarians, providing a robust framework for social justice and individual ethics.
