Abstract: For this research we studied the accessibility of notarial services for Dutch citizens. Financial and other thresholds are identified using literature, secondary data and interviews. The findings show that bottlenecks in the accessibility of notarial services are particularly profound in the area of family property law. When settling inheritances and drawing up wills, living wills and cohabitation agreements, people may drop out or not contact notaries at all because of the costs or the “posh” image of the notary profession, but also due to ignorance or other obstacles.
