Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Destination Management Organizations (DMOs) play a crucial role in the sustainable development, promotion, and coordination of tourism activities at regional and national levels. Through an interdisciplinary approach, this research explores how DMOs contribute to strengthening the image of destinations, enhancing the tourist experience, and balancing the interests of various stakeholders. The paper pays particular attention to the current context in Romania and the Republic of Moldova, both of which are undergoing active institutional reforms regarding the establishment and operation of DMOs. Based on international comparisons, 11 strategic proposals and recommendations are presented, aimed at supporting the development of sustainable, effective DMOs that are tailored to the local context. The study also includes a comparative analysis of several international DMO models, highlighting best practices and challenges in the implementation process, and offers an analytical framework that is useful for researchers, decision-makers, and practitioners interested in modernizing destination management in Central and Eastern Europe.
