Abstract: This paper examines ghazal (love poetry) in the oeuvre of al-khubzurzī, focusing on its defining features, aesthetic properties, stylistic strategies, and thematic concerns. It further investigates the extent to which the Abbasid socio-cultural milieu informs the poet’s amorous experience, while situating his work within the historical evolution of Arabic ghazal. It also offers a comparative perspective by relating his poetry to earlier traditions of both sensual and spiritual love. Seeking to provide a critical and analytical reading of al-khubzurzī’s ghazal, this paper explores its aesthetic structure and artistic configuration. His love poetry negotiates a productive tension between fidelity to the classical Arabic poetic heritage and a renewed poetic vision, achieved through the creative reworking of inherited imagery and syntactic patterns within a contemporaneous framework. Al-khubzurzī does not subscribe to the conventions of chaste (ʿudhrī) love poetry. His ghazal eschews idealization and sanctification, articulating instead an unambiguous and corporeal emotional register. He expresses physical desire toward women directly and without euphemism, adopting a realist stance that rejects romanticized abstractions. Woman, in his poetry, is neither angelic nor idealized, but a living human presence marked by desire, vulnerability, and imperfection. The amorous diction in al-khubzurzī’s poetry is distinguished by its clarity, delicacy, and accessibility, accompanied by a pronounced engagement with intertextuality in its various manifestations. This intertextual practice enables a conscious poetic reconstruction that balances originality with tradition. Musicality—both external, through meter and rhyme, and internal, through phonetic and rhythmic patterning—plays a central role in shaping the poem’s affective force. Close textual analysis demonstrates that natural imagery is employed both aesthetically and semantically, functioning as an emotional correlative to the poet’s amorous states. The ghazal image in al-khubzurzī’s work is constructed through a dynamic interplay between the sensory and the abstract, whereby intangible meanings are embodied in vivid, sensuous images that heighten emotional intensity and immediacy. Notably, the poet draws extensively on imagery derived from everyday market life—bread, bakers, and widely circulating proverbs—transforming these quotidian elements into resonant human symbols that evoke poverty, dignity, loyalty, and endurance. Rhythm occupies a foundational position in al-khubzurzī’s poetic practice. His poetry is clearly oriented toward chanting and oral performance before a listening audience. Consequently, he adheres rigorously to classical metrical and rhyming schemes, while enriching them with layers of internal musicality that ensure the verse’s immediacy, memorability, and communicative efficacy.
