Reputation of a Country as a Factor in Attracting Foreign Direct Investment

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: The reputation of a country has become a decisive factor in the global competition for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). As investors increasingly rely on qualitative assessments, variables such as governance quality, political stability, corruption levels, institutional effectiveness and regulatory predictability play a major role in shaping investment decisions. This article explores how national reputation influences FDI attraction, drawing from existing theoretical models and empirical evidence. A qualitative methodology based on secondary data is used to synthesize research findings from academic literature, international institutions and global indices. The analysis reveals that a strong reputation reduces perceived risk, increases investor confidence and enhances the competitiveness of a host country. Conversely, poor governance and inconsistent policies undermine reputation and discourage FDI inflows. The study concludes that countries seeking to boost FDI must cultivate a credible and stable image through institutional reforms, transparency, and strategic nation-branding efforts.
