The development and validation of an assessment rubric for pars plana vitrectomy
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Objectives Microsurgical training is vital in ophthalmology. Effective evaluation of microsurgical competencies is essential for developing vitreoretinal specialists. This study aimed to create a standardized assessment scale for pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) and verify its reliability and validity. Methods A panel of vitreoretinal surgeons from multiple countries developed an initial scale based on surgical protocols, experience, and literature. Experts reviewed the scale and completed a questionnaire to provide feedback. Face and content validity were refined through iterative revisions. Construct validity was assessed by comparing existing scales and analyzing statistical indicators, including intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), Chi-square ( χ 2 ), degrees of freedom (df), goodness of fit index (GFI), adjusted GFI (AGFI), average variance extracted (AVE), composite reliability (CR), and root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA). Results Ten experts completed the questionnaire. After revisions, consensus was achieved on the final scale. Strong construct validity was demonstrated. Based on 260 completed scales, both intrarater and interrater reliability showed ICC values >0.7 for all items and overall scores. Conclusions The developed PPV assessment scale shows strong reliability and validity, making it a practical tool for evaluating vitreoretinal surgical skills.
