Migrant churches and missional praxis: A case of AFM Shona-speaking assemblies in Cape Town
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: In the wake of Zimbabwe's economic decline, precipitated by political and economic instability, a significant number of Zimbabweans migrated to South Africa in search of improved opportunities. Migrant churches, particularly the Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM) Shona-speaking assemblies, emerged as crucial venues for spiritual expression, community building, and mission activities. This study investigates the historical context and establishment of these assemblies, their missiological roles and contributions, and the ways in which they have adapted their religious practices to the new environment. The findings elucidate the pivotal role of migrant churches in fostering social networks, providing emotional support, and facilitating conflict resolution among migrants. Additionally, the study reveals that AFM Shona-speaking assemblies play a substantial role in enhancing the spiritual, social, and missional lives of Zimbabwean migrants in Cape Town.
