Improving Maize Yields among Tanzanian Farmers through Hybrid Seed Programmes: An Empirical Analysis
Year: 2026
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Maize is crucial for food security and income among Tanzanian farmers, but traditional seed varieties often underperform compared to hybrid seeds in various climatic conditions. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of hybrid seed programmes on maize yields among Tanzanian farmers by assessing yield improvements and factors influencing adoption. A mixed-methods approach was used, involving quantitative data from a survey of 500 farmers and qualitative insights from focus group discussions. Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis were applied for data interpretation. Farmers who adopted hybrid seeds reported an average yield increase of 27% compared to those using traditional seeds. Adoption rates were highest among those receiving training on the use of hybrid seeds. Hybrid seed programmes positively impact maize yields in Tanzania, but successful adoption depends on farmer education and support. Government initiatives should enhance awareness and provide comprehensive training to increase the uptake of hybrid seeds among farmers.
