Wading through the Science and Sensationalism of Fish Farming in Ahousaht's Traditional Territories
Year: 2012
Type: article
Abstract: Katie Beach explores the potential impacts of fish farming on Ahousaht's traditional territories, with considerations for geographical variations and species-specific differences. Beach discusses the historical development of fish farming in British Columbia, highlighting the lack of consultation with First Nations and the resulting contention. She emphasizes Ahousaht's negotiation processes with fish farming companies, leading to protocol agreements providing input into operations and financial compensation. Sea lice prevalence is addressed, with cooperative efforts between Ahousaht and the Uu-a-thluk fisheries department to study its impact. Beach acknowledges biases in research interpretations and advocates for stakeholder considerations in understanding and addressing the impacts of fish farming companies. Concerns over other biological threats and escaped farmed fish are also discussed within the context of Ahousaht's management of their territories.
