The Role of Social Media as an Innovative Channel in Young People’s Mental Health: A Systematic Review (2020–2025)

Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Study design: Systematic Review
Abstract: [EN] Youth mental health has become a priority challenge in today’s society, where problems such as anxiety, depression and stress are increasingly common. In this context, social media plays a central role in young people’s lives, generating both risks and opportunities. This systematic review analyses the role of social media as an innovative channel for raising awareness and improving access to mental health services among young people. Recent studies show that young people use Instagram, TikTok and YouTube as regular sources of information on psychological well-being. The aim of this review is to identify how social media influences awareness, help-seeking and access to mental health services among young people. The literature reviewed identifies three main axes: social media as spaces for community support and stigma reduction; the risks associated with misinformation and exposure to harmful content; and the opportunities for marketing and awareness campaigns led by professionals or institutions.
