The Rise of Autonomous AI Digital Humans in China's Live-Streaming E-Commerce: Architecture, Market Dynamics, and Global Implications
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: China has emerged as the undisputed global leaderin deploying autonomous Artificial Intelligence (AI) digital humans—also referred to as “digital avatars” or “shuzi ren”—within live-streaming e-commerce ecosystems. This paper investigates the technical architecture, deployment scale, market economics, and socio-commercial implications of AI digital human livestream hosts (AILHs) operating across major Chinese platforms including JD.com, Taobao, Douyin, Kuaishou, and Baidu Youxuan. Drawing on industry reports, academic literature, and documented case studies from 2023–2025, we analyze how large language models (LLMs), neural text-to-speech (TTS) systems, real-time rendering engines, and multimodal interaction pipelines converge to produce autonomous sales agents capable of 24/7 operation without human intervention. Key findings indicate that the Chinese AI digital human market reached RMB 4.12 billion in 2024 (an 85.3% year-on-year increase), that over 50,000 merchants on JD.com alone deployed digital humans for uninterrupted broadcasts during the 2025 618 Grand Promotion, and that AI-generated livestreams can reduce operational costs by up to 90% versus human hosts while maintaining or exceeding conversion rates. We further examine consumer trust dynamics, the hybrid human–AI transition, regulatory landscape, ethical tensions, and the technological gap between China and Western markets. Our analysis concludes that AI digital humans represent not merely a cost-reduction tool but a fundamental restructuring of the human–commerce interface, with implications that will resonate globally as the technology diffuses beyond Chinese borders.
