Abstract: In this paper, I analyze restitution letters authored by Hungarian Holocaust survivors. These letters were written in a singular historical moment: after the end of the Second World War, and before the coming to power of the communist party; when the survivors’ memories of their experiences were still fresh. In most letters, the authors recounted their fate, described the property they wanted to get back, and included several features which cannot be found in private letters, such as their expectations toward the new system. To analyze the letters, I use a complex methodology, including microhistory, law, history of emotions, and social history.
