The Efficiency Paradox: When and Why Human Labor Signals Premium Value in an AI-Driven Economy
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Synthesized principles of behavioral economics and consumer psychology to investigate the "Human Premium"—the incremental value customers assign to human-delivered services despite AI’s superior efficiency. By applying the Labor Illusion and IKEA Effect, I developed a theoretical framework to explain why "visible effort" and "strategic inefficiency" enhance customer loyalty in high-stakes contexts. I proposed the "Inefficiency Paradox," arguing that human imperfection functions as a critical signal of authenticity and trust. Through case studies in luxury hospitality and service recovery, I formulated the "Strategic Friction" model, providing a roadmap for firms to balance algorithmic precision with human-centric value. This research bridges my background in technical exploration with a new focus on how psychological insights drive economic value in automated markets.
