ANALYSIS OF THE WORLD TRADE ORGANISATION (WTO) TRADE FACILITATION AGREEMENT (TFA) AND ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR NIGERIA’s ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Type: article
Abstract: This paper examines the World Trade Organization (WTO) Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA) and its implications for Nigeria's economic development, highlighting both opportunities and constraints. As Africa's largest economy, Nigeria faces structural challenges, including low industrialization, an underdeveloped agricultural sector, heavy reliance on oil revenues, pervasive informality, weak infrastructure, and governance deficits, all of which make trade facilitation reforms both urgent and complex.Employing a doctrinal research methodology, the paper critically analyses the provisions of the TFA within the broader framework of multilateral trade policies and Nigeria's domestic legal environment. The paper analyzed the provisions of the TFA within the framework of multilateral trade policies such as tariffs, quotas, and trade agreements, while critically engaging with existing literature and legal instruments. The findings reveal that, on the one hand, the TFA has the potential to stimulate economic growth, enhance technology transfer, generate employment, and attract foreign direct investment (FDI).On the other hand, exposure to unpredictable global markets, risks of deindustrialization, trade imbalances, and the burden of complying with stringent international standards pose significant obstacles for Nigeria.Based on these findings, the paper recommends strengthening domestic institutional capacities, enhancing trade negotiation strategies, and adopting legal reforms that align international commitments with national development priorities. It concludes that optimizing the benefits of the TFA requires a balanced legal framework and equitable global cooperation, which are vital for ensuring that Nigeria leverages multilateral trade to foster sustainable economic prosperity.
