The role of britain in colombia’s independence and social development

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This article examines the role of Britain in Colombia’s independence and subsequent social development. It situates the arrival of British support within the broader context of European and American revolutions of the early 19th century. The analysis focuses on three main aspects: the establishment of early diplomatic relations, the participation of the British Legion and individual actors in the independence battles, and the long-term influence of British presence on Colombian society. By drawing on primary and secondary sources, the study demonstrates how Britain’s involvement extended beyond military contributions to lasting cultural, social, and institutional impacts. More than two centuries later, the legacy of these interactions remains visible in Colombia’s development.
