Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: In this article, the knowledge involved in the stonemason’s craft is analyzed in relation to a specific historical, social, and territorial context. The ejido of Escalerillas, in the municipality of San Luis Potosí, is a community where this craft has been passed down for at least three generations. In-depth interviews with artisans, field visits to their workshops, the material extraction sites, and the places where they install their works, together with a review of the literature, made it possible to understand that artisans’ knowledge is not limited to the production of handicrafts, as they combine it with other forms of expertise. Furthermore, it was identified that cultural and professional institutions linked to architecture and archaeology value this craft and rely on its artisans to the extent of involving them in the restoration of buildings, sculptures, and monuments.
