Abstract: Diabetes Mellitus is a disease characterized by excessively high blood sugar levels causing complicationsin many systems. Diabetes mellitus can lead to disorders in carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism as wellas serious health problems such as neuropathy, retinopathy, nephropathy, peripheral vascular disease, coronary artery disease and atherosclerosis. Diabetic hepatopathies are a common chronic complicationaffecting approximately 30% of patients with diabetes. Rutin (quercetin rutinoside) is a glycoside of theflavonoid quercetin. Rutin prevents platelet aggregation has anti-inflammatory effects and reduces circulatingfat and cholesterol. In this study, we aimed to determine the effects of rutin against nephropathy due to dibetesmellitus. For this purpose, 40 female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into 4 groups as Control,Diabetes, Diabetes+Metformin and Diabetes+Rutin50 Groups. At the end of the study, rats were sacrificedand kidney tissue samples were taken. In the diabetes group, degeneration, necrosis, glomerular atrophy andhyperemia were observed in the renal tubule epithelium due to hyperglycemia while these pathologicalconditions were significantly reduced in the routine treatment group. In addition, immunohistochemical andimmunofluorescence analyses revealed that the expression levels of TIM and 8-OHdG which were at veryhigh levels due to diabetes, were decreased significantly. As a result of the examinations, it was determinedthat rutin treatment reduced apoptosis and DNA damage by reducing oxidative damage in kidney tissues andincreased tissue resistance by strengthening immunity. This suggested that Rutin had alternative orcomplementary effects in the treatment of diabetes. We believe that it will shed light on future studies.Key words: Diabetes mellitus, Oxidative stress, Rutin, TIM
