Abstract: This research aimed to assess the accumulation levelsof heavy metals, specifically aluminum (Al), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), and cadmium(Cd), in the macroalgae Ulva sp. and Gracilaria sp. and to evaluate theirusability as bioindicators of heavy metal pollution in the aquatic ecosystemsof Izmit Bay, Türkiye. This research was carried out by taking macroalgae andseawater samples from two different locations (Tavşancıl Industrial Zone andNaile Café Residential Area) in two different seasons (summer (July 2024) andwinter season (November 2024)). While the physical-chemical parameters such astemperature, pH and dissolved oxygen were measured in the field, heavy metalcontent was analyzed by ICP-OES method by ISO 11885:2007 standard in a TÜRKAKaccredited laboratory. The obtained data showed that the highest heavy metalaccumulation was in Gracilaria sp. species, Al concentration was 210.74 mg/Land Fe concentration was 176.51 mg/L. In the study, heavy metal levels inseawater were found below the threshold value (<0.05 mg/L), which showedthat the accumulation occurred mainly through bioconcentration in macroalgae. The absence of Cd in all samples indicates that the pollution level of thiselement is low. This study determined that Ulva sp. and Gracilaria sp. can beused as reliable ecological bioindicators to monitor heavy metal pollution.
