From Symptom Duration to Histological Validation: Refining MRI Relaxation Time Biomarkers for Thrombus Chronicity in Deep Vein Thrombosis

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), if untreated, can lead to pulmonary embolism, recurrent venous thromboembolism, and post-thrombotic syndrome. While anticoagulation is the first-line therapy, catheter-based interventions are essential for patients unsuitable for medical management or with severe thrombus burden. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) relaxation times (T1, T2, T2*) are sensitive to tissue microstructure and composition and may provide noninvasive biomarkers of thrombus chronicity. Our previous analysis found T2 to be the strongest predictor of clot age based on reported symptom duration.
