Manufacturing large-tapered profile rings by combination of flaring and Confined Axial Ring Rolling processes

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Due to the significant radial dimensional variation and the consequent flow difference, large-tapered profile rings with steep cross-sectional taper present huge challenges for traditional ring forming technologies. This study proposes a novel process for manufacturing these ring types by Confined Axial Ring Rolling (CARR), featured by using a conical drive roll to locally and incrementally roll the upper surface of a pre-flaring ring blank along the axial direction. The deformation feature and key influencing factors in flaring and CARR stages are investigated. The forming results of two large-tapered profile rings with different sizes confirmed the feasibility of the new process in industrial application. A total flaring angle of 45° using three flaring passes can attain the balance between the deformation requirement and cost. To guarantee the forming accuracy and avoid processing failure, the bite-in condition and the variation in contact area should be simultaneously considered when select the processing parameters during CARR processes. For rings with smaller diameter, the height of holding roll can be decreased.
