Home, hope, and hazard : a gendered inquiry into climate-induced migration in Dhaka’s slums
Year: 2025
Type: dissertation
Abstract: This research investigates the gendered dimension of climate induced migration in Bangladesh context.Over the years, millions of Bangladeshis living in coastal areas have been forced to leave their homes due to natural disasters and rising sea levels. It is evident that the climate change affects men and women differently. Therefore, this study explores the women vulnerabilities and marginalization due to patriarchal norms while displacing and resettling in Dhaka's informal settlement, like the Korail slum.It further explores that climate displacement is an ongoing problem influenced by structural violence and institutional neglect. The research adapted a qualitative and intersectional feminist approach. The findings are based on a detailed group interview with displaced women in Korail, along with analysis of other secondary data sources. The findings have been complemented by thematic and genderbased analysis. It explores how women's vulnerabilities intensified during and after migration triggered by climate change. Moreover, the research highlights adaptation strategies undertaken by the women and building resilience in their everyday life within the constraints of urban life. The research is critically analyzed through the theoretical frameworks from feminist peace research and climate justice to unpack how gender and migration intersect during and post-disaster contexts. The research findings reveal that the women often lack control over migration decisions and face discrimination and marginalized when trying to adjust in city life. However, they still continue to show resilience by securing livelihood and creating informal support network. The research further underscores that the materialistic adaptation while is important, however, the emotional aspect, claiming identity and dignity is equally important for them for which they aspire to achieve in future.
