The Influence of Movement Breaks on Sedentary Time and Glycemic Control in Adults with Chronic Pain

Abstract: The MoveAway Pain Program (MAPP) provides patients with chronic pain (CP) personalized physical activity recommendations for incorporating movement breaks into their daily lives. The study aimed to determine the effects of MAPP on sedentary and physical activity time, glycemic control and physical function. A retrospective analysis was performed on 20 charts of patients referred to MAPP between March-September 2023. Compared to habitual days, recommendations to perform movement breaks lowered sedentary time (p=0.016) and increased physical activity levels, as reflected by increased step count (p=0.028) and light physical activity time (p=0.004). There was no difference in 24-hour blood glucose (p=0.394) or time in hyperglycemia (p=0.983) on habitual and movement days. Physical function improved after the program, as reflected by improvements in timed-up-and-go (p=0.002) and 5-times sit-to-stand (p=0.0009) tests. Overall, MAPP reduced sedentary time, improved physical function and increased physical activity levels, but not indices of glycemic control in adults with CP.
