Effects of High-intensity Interval Training on Blood Lactate Levels and Cognition in Healthy Adults: Systematic Review and Meta-regression

Year: 2022
Type: review
Abstract: Background. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) may confer cognitive benefits through apathway involving lactate – an exercise metabolite. R1: Individually, what is the work-interval duration, work-interval volume, work-to-rest ratio, and session volume that is most effective in increasing peripheral lactate accumulation. R2: What is the relationship between peripheral lactate levels and post-exercise cognitive performance in healthy adults? Methods. R1: Network meta-analysis, categorical meta-analysis, and mixed effects meta- regression were performed. R2: Correlation and determination coefficients were generated. Results. R1: A low work-interval volume, medium session volume, and low work-to-rest ratio may elicit peak peripheral lactate accumulation. R2 Hypotheses: i) higher blood lactate post- HIIT increases interference performance for a longer duration, and ii) predicts better interference performance at 30 mins post-HIIT. Discussion. The above parameters may elicit peak peripheral lactate levels, which may be related to improved interference performance post-exercise. Our findings need to be validated using randomized controlled trials.
