Investigation of the Arabidopsis Thaliana proline-rich extensin-like receptor kinase family and plant defense responses
Year: 2003
Type: dissertation
Abstract: Fourteen Arabidopsis thaliana proline-rich extensin-like receptor kinases (AtPERKs) with unique proline-rich extensin-like extracellular domains represent a novel class of plant receptor kinases. Differential expression of AtPERK8-14 suggests they may have diverse functions during plant development. RNA gel blot results suggest that AtPERK1 may participate in perceiving and transducing a wound-associated signal and may also be involved in R gene-mediated resistance. Two defense responses, SAR (systemic acquired resistance) and ARR (age-related resistance), were also studied. Data from protein gel blot analysis demonstrated that DIR1 (defective in induced resistance 1) is localized to the apoplast in healthy plants. In planta bacterial growth experiments demonstrated that ARR and R gene-mediated resistance act additively to limit Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato (Pst) growth. ICS1 (isochorismate synthase 1) was expressed similarly in young and mature plants as expected for an enzyme that is thought to be required for salicylic acid (SA) synthesis during SAR and ARR.
