Design for innovation: centering the patient voice in the development of trauma clinical guidance

Year: 2025
Type: conference-abstract
Abstract: Traumatic injuries are the leading cause of death among Americans between the ages of 1 and 44 years of age,1 resulting in approximately $396 billion in combined healthcare costs and productivity losses annually.2 Despite the widely acknowledged 17-year gap between research discovery and its implementation into clinical practice, many trauma professionals continue to be left with inadequate access to up-to-date, evidence-based, relevant, and user-friendly clinical guidance for far beyond these 17 years.3–5 Further, about 20% of trauma-related deaths could be prevented, highlighting disparities in access to high-quality emergency and trauma care services.6 Barriers to access are myriad. Clinical guidance for trauma care has been created mainly by academic level I trauma centers and is often designed primarily for use in these same high-level facilities. Consequently, there is underrepresentation of geographic regions, disciplines, and ethnic or cultural backgrounds in both the sources and relevance of the guidance provided.7
