Modelling, optimization and control of hydrogen-based power supply system for residential buildings

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This paper analyses self-sustained green electric power supply of residential buildings based on photovoltaic power, hydrogen technologies and batteries. Photovoltaic power generation depends on season, time in day and weather and it is inherently out of sync with the power demands of residential building. This imbalance can be managed by short and long-term storage of electric energy using batteries and hydrogen technologies. In the assumed case the electric energy is used to supply the heat pump and other domestic electric consumers (illumination, cooking, washing, consumer electronics, etc.). Heat pump is used to heat the household building and its sanitary water. It is further assumed that fuel cell and heat pump are thermally integrated, meaning the waste heat of the fuel cell is directed into the heat pump to elevate the overall efficiency of the system. In the paper a techno-economic simulation model of the entire system is developed to support optimal sizing of system components and demonstrate system operation.
