All by myself: The effect of alcohol consumption on suicidal ideaiton in solitary and group drinking situations
Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: Previous cross-sectional studies have found that solitary drinking versus drinking in group settings is related to suicidal ideation (Gonzalez, 2012; Ju et al., 2019). These findings fit with theory, which suggests that thwarted belongingness increases suicidal ideation (Van Orden et al., 2010) and drinking in social contexts facilitates social connection (Fiarbairn, 2017; Fairbairn & Sayette, 2014). To date, no studies has examined the effect of drinking alone (versus with others) on suicidal ideation using ecological momentary assessment, which has methodological advantages over cross-sectional methods. This study will be a secondary data analysis of project designed to test a novel mobile health intervention to reduce suicidality in LGBTQ+ individuals. LGBTQ+ individuals with recent self-injurious thoughts and/or behaviors completed 14 days of ecological momentary assessment of alcohol use, thwarted belongingness, perceived burdensomeness, and self-injurious thoughts and behaviors.
