Inhibitory effects of Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam extract on mast cell-mediated immediate hypersensitivity via mitogen-activated protein kinase and nuclear factor-κB signaling pathways

Abstract: Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam (BCT) has traditionally been used to relieve vomiting, febrile symptoms, and mucosal irritation, whereas its anti-allergic mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this study, the anti-allergic activity of BCT was assessed in vivo using the passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) model and in vitro using MC/9 mast cells. Oral administration of BCT significantly reduced Evans blue extravasation in PCA mice, indicating inhibition of immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated immediate hypersensitivity. In MC/9 cells, BCT dose-dependently suppressed PMA/A23187-induced secretion of histamine, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). Mechanistically, BCT inhibited the phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinases (JNK, ERK, and p38) and reduced nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) mRNA expression. These findings suggest that BCT mitigates immediate allergic responses by modulating mast cell activation and key inflammatory signaling pathways, supporting its potential as a natural anti-allergic agent.
