Abstract: Combined injuries of the chest and abdominal cavities are among the most severe injuries in emergency surgery and are characterized by extremely high mortality rates. A significant proportion of fatal outcomes is associated with postoperative complications affecting the bronchopulmonary system. This review analyses and systematizes the latest studies of domestic and foreign authors devoted to the epidemiology of combined injuries, to the pathophysiological features that cause respiratory disorders, as well as to the important organizational, diagnostic and tactical approaches to the treatment of such patients. Particular attention is paid to minimally invasive surgical technologies such as videothoracoscopy and videolaparoscopy as a promising method of reducing operative aggression and preventing respiratory complications. The necessity of developing unified diagnostic algorithms and of adjusting the surgical strategy taking into account the individual risk factors for the development of bronchopulmonary complications is also emphasized.
