Effectiveness study and model simplification of laser cladding process with coaxial shroud protection

Abstract: Among many competitive deposition technologies, the laser cladding (LC) with coaxial shroud protection has shown to provide the new promises for cladding active metal in open environment for surface repair and complex components fabrication. Since the LC process fabricates parts on a layer-by-layer basis, it is important to stimulate the geometry of both single-track clad and multi-track clad to obtain accurate dimensions and high surface quality of the fabricated parts. This study primarily validates the protectiveness of three-layer annular coaxial shroud (TACS) through experimental detection. The experimental results show that the Ti6Al4V cladding can be effectively protected when the shielding gas flowrate is greater than 30 L/min. Cladding experiments were conducted to determine the model optimal cross-section profile, fitted with three frequently used functions (Parabola, Sine and Elliptic functions). The results show that the parabola model fits best the clad profile without extra shielding gas presenting, while the elliptic model is more accurate in describing the clad profile with extra shielding gas. Furthermore, the optimal overlapping coefficient was determined at 0.542 under optimal extra shielding gas, based on both elliptic model and flat-top overlapping model (FOM).
